Emotional Agility

“Your emotions make you human. Even the unpleasant ones have a purpose. Don’t lock them away. If you ignore them, they just get louder and angrier.” – Sabaa Tahir

Emotions are a part and parcel of who we are. A human being without emotion becomes a Robot and that shows that we are but a bundle of emotions. If we accept this point, then the question is why do we struggle and fight against our emotions. When we strive with our emotions, are we not striving with ourselves?

It’s important to reflect how we are treating our emotions every moment. Are we treating our emotions as pieces of information or as something which is bad or as something which has to be controlled or as precious parts of who we are. How we treat our emotions will decide how we manage our emotions and get the best out of them.

We place so much of importance on IQ and Technical Skills, but what’s the importance we give to EQ (Emotional Quotience). Have you reflected on how effective your IQ & Technical skill will be, if your EQ is not able to support it? Just visualize making a presentation to your leadership team when you are emotionally upset or when you get stuck in an emotion and you get immobilized by that emotion.

Emotional Quotience helps to increase your Emotional Agility. The first step is to increase your EQ and EQ is a predictor of success in life and work and is a set of emotional and social skills that collectively establish how well we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.

Before you deal with the external world, it’s important to deal with your internal world. The effectiveness of the inner person is determined by how effectively you are able to navigate the emotional ups and downs, accept who you are, nurture an open & clear mind to achieve your targets. This is critical to ensure that you are able to cope with external challenges and to develop and maintain effective social relationships. Emotional Agility holds the answer and in the words of Susan David, “Emotional agility is a process that enables us to navigate life’s twists and turns with self-acceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind”.

Emotional Agility is about becoming aware of your emotions, mindfully and effectively managing your emotions, using the emotional information effectively and navigating your inner thoughts & feelings to achieve the intended results. It’s about not getting stuck with your inner feelings but being able to rise above them without denying or subduing them and gaining the wisdom from those emotions to accomplish the desired outcome. In a nutshell, Emotional Agility is the stepping stone to your personal and professional success.
